Night Watch began with a postcard I had bought years earlier of an early Mondrian painting. I hadn’t yet fallen under Mondrian’s spell, but the image stayed with me until I finally felt compelled to paint it for myself. As I worked, it evolved into something of my own, including the cold sun that found its way into the scene. Looking back, I can see the beginnings of ideas I would return to years later in my Farmhouse series and, most recently, my 2026 paintings of isolated houses.
