Maine Coastline began with an image from an Edward Hopper catalogue. I borrowed the structure of his scene and then repainted the landscape as my own. Working from an existing image meant the coastline stayed exactly where I left it: the sky wouldn’t suddenly change, the water wouldn’t shift, and no storm would roll in unless I decided to put one there. Within that fixed landscape, I was free to make my own choices.
