Coastline With Storm Approaching began as a plein-air painting, although I eventually brought it inside to finish. Layers of glaze across the lower half of the canvas give the water a depth that contrasts with the lighter, shifting sky above. Those shapes at the horizon are actually sky and clouds, but if you see mountains there instead, that works too. Sometimes the viewer gets to decide what the landscape becomes.
