Mondrian’s Forest began as an exploration of Mondrian’s way of seeing trees and became a long process of learning on the canvas. Set in a floodplain, the forest nearly conceals the suggestion of a farmhouse behind the trees. Later, standing in front of Mondrian’s painting in a museum in The Hague, I could finally see what I had understood (and misunderstood) about his work and where I had gotten more creative. By then, of course, the forest had become my own.
