Tall Grasses was painted on Cape Cod, although it doesn’t depict one particular view. Storms there can transform the landscape quickly, pushing clouds across the sky and shifting the sunlight over the water. I built the painting in many layers, including strips of canvas laid over the surface, giving the three-foot-square piece unusual depth and texture. The grasses, water, and clouds begin to blur together, much as they do after days of coastal rain and wind.
