“So Sad”… Trump was painted in 2017, during the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency, as a foretelling of what I feared his leadership would bring. He stands overlooking a landscape devastated by flooding, while his border wall appears small and ultimately powerless against the weeds pushing beneath it, representing people fleeing impossible circumstances in search of refuge. He stands on a crushed Constitution. The exhausted, defeated figure reflected what I hoped might eventually come to pass. As it turned out, that part was wishful thinking. The title borrows a phrase Trump himself frequently used in his early speeches: “So sad.”
