Long Pond Entrance comes from many summers spent swimming in Long Pond, one of Wellfleet’s clear, cold, glacier-carved freshwater ponds. My short swimming goal has always been the steps leading up to a cottage overlooking the water. Along the way, the shoreline is anything but quiet: wildflowers and water plants crowd the grasses, turtles sun themselves on fallen branches, birds loudly defend their territory, and bullfrogs announce themselves from among the water lilies. It’s a familiar swimming route filled with the small, noisy life of the pond.
