Flowers 2/12 – “After Cézanne” / I began the long series of flower portraits near the beginning Covid pandemic, when I was using a Cézanne flower painting as my reference. Looking at it now, the arrangement feels more careful and somewhat stilted compared with the looser flowers I painted later. It became an early step in a series that gradually moved away from the reference and toward something more instinctive and my own.
