Dune As It Was

Dune As It Was began with a canvas stretched with the help of my friends Audrey and Helene It became an eight-year record of the dune just outside my Wellfleet house. Each summer I returned to the canvas, adding and changing the landscape without ever thinking to document the stages along the way. Since then, the dune has grown, the path has shifted, generations of volunteer trees have come and gone, and even the beach grass my daughter and I planted in 1998 has disappeared. When I finally saw the nearly five-foot painting hanging in the Wellfleet Library in 2025, I could step back far enough to appreciate all those years of accumulated depth. The title feels especially fitting now: this is the dune as it was.
