Chrysanthemum (After Mondrian) began with a small chrysanthemum painting I saw at a Mondrian exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. I bought a postcard of the work and returned to it many times, painting and repainting the flower in different ways. Each version became a variation on the original, a chance to see how much one simple flower could change while still remaining recognizable.
